Teejay, Morgan Heritage, Christopher Martin & More at 2024 “Caribbean Music Awards”

Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre was the epicenter of Caribbean music’s most exhilarating night on Thursday, August 29, 2024, as the highly anticipated Caribbean Music Awards 2024 took center stage. This year’s event was a jubilant celebration of the vibrant Caribbean diaspora, hosted by the Queen of Dancehall, Spice, and the King of Caribbean Comedy, Majah Hype. The evening was a kaleidoscope of rhythm, culture, and unity, beautifully encapsulated under one roof.

The night began with a dazzling Red Carpet spectacle, where stars like Trinidad James, Lady London, Marcia Griffiths, and Cedella Marley strutted their stuff. The glamorous kickoff set the tone for a night filled with electrifying performances and heartfelt tributes.

DJ Kevin Crown ignited the evening with an exhilarating Soca showcase, featuring a blend of talent from across the Caribbean. Lead Pipe and Saddis from Barbados, Ravi B from Trinidad, and Pumpa from the Virgin Islands were among those who set the stage ablaze. The dynamic showcase was rounded off by a powerful performance from Skinny Fabulous, a triple winner of the night.

The official hosts, Spice and Majah Hype, brought their signature charisma to the stage, welcoming the audience and presenting the first award of the evening. Ras-I took home the ‘Best New Artist (Reggae)’ accolade, setting a high bar for the rest of the night.

Cedella Marley, a beacon of Caribbean culture, was honored with the ‘Legacy Award’. In a moving speech, she expressed her gratitude and dedication to continuing her family’s illustrious legacy. “I’m truly blessed to continue the legacy that my family built,” she shared. Her tribute to her mother, Rita Marley, resonated deeply with the audience, underscoring the familial bonds that are a cornerstone of Caribbean music.

The ‘Voice Of The Caribbean’ segment was a highlight of the evening. Alaine enchanted the crowd with “No Ordinary Love,” while Christopher Martin delivered a stirring performance of “Mama” and “Cheaters Prayer.” Pressure’s rendition of “Love and Affection” earned a standing ovation, and Dexta Daps dazzled with a medley of his greatest hits, including the viral sensation “Shabba Madda Pot.”

Trinidad James presented the ‘Artist of the Year (Male Soca)’ award to Skinny Fabulous, while Kalash took home the ‘Artist of The Year (French Caribbean)’ trophy. The legendary Mighty Sparrow was honored with the ‘Calypso Award Honor’, presented by Majah Hype and Machel Montano.

The celebration continued with a high-energy party segment, hosted by DJ Young Chow. Performances by Mical Teja, V’ghn, Mr Killa, and collaborations like “Party Bad” with Mr. Legz HT electrified the audience. Nailah Blackman, who won twice this year, teamed up with Lyrikal for a dynamic performance of “Best Self.” Patrice Roberts closed this segment with her hit “Anxiety.”

Ravi B, celebrated for his decade-long impact and dedication to Chutney music, was honored as a Chutney Award Honoree. Asa Bantan won the People’s Choice Award powered by Spotify’s Frequency, while Nailah Blackman and Skinny Fabulous took home the award for ‘Collaboration of the Year (Soca)’ for “Come Home.”

The night was also marked by a poignant tribute to late Caribbean music icons. Performances by Sherwin Gardner, Teddyson John, and Gramps Morgan honored the enduring legacy of these beloved figures. Morgan Heritage closed the tribute with a powerful rendition of “Down By The River,” paying homage to their late brother Peter Morgan.

Baby Cham awarded Spice the ‘Artist of the Decade’ honor, celebrating her 25 years of groundbreaking contributions to the music industry. The event concluded with a special performance honoring Marcia Griffiths, who is celebrating 60 years in music, with dazzling tributes from Tosh Alexander, Aiesha, Alaine, and Nadine Sutherland.

The 2024 Caribbean Music Awards was a testament to the rich tapestry of Caribbean music, showcasing a blend of tradition and innovation. The night was a vivid celebration of the artists who bring Caribbean rhythms to life, inspiring fans and fellow musicians alike.
