Justina Lee Brown Unveils Heart-Wrenching New Single ‘Billiki’

Justina Lee Brown, an award-winning Jazz, Blues, and Folk Music singer has released her powerful new single, ‘Billiki‘. This emotionally charged track explores the themes of child abuse, sexual harassment, and the harsh realities faced by young girls in Nigeria and rural African communities. ‘Billiki’ captures listeners with its haunting melodies and Brown’s soulful vocals, delivered in her native Yoruba.

The song tells the heartbreaking tale of a young girl named Billiki, who goes missing after being sent to fetch water for her family. Through this narrative, Brown sheds light on the alarming insecurity that plagues young children, particularly girls, in their communities. Drawing inspiration from real-life incidents such as the tragic death of Tina, killed by a police officer’s accidental discharge, and the brutal rape and murder of UNIBEN student Uwa, ‘Billiki’ is more than a song; it is a call to action, highlighting the urgent need for societal change to protect vulnerable children and ensure their safety.

“Community should be a place of safety, but unfortunately, in Nigeria and in Africa, it’s not the case,” Brown reflects. “I had my share of challenges growing up in the slums of Ajegunle City, Lagos, with my teenage mother. I was exposed to danger and abuse at a very young age, and it took many years to come to terms with that pain. ‘Billiki’ is my way of shedding light on these issues and giving a voice to those who cannot speak out.”

The music video for ‘Billiki’, directed by herself Justina Ogunlolu, was shot in the United Kingdom. It visually brings to life the song’s themes, adding a powerful layer to the storytelling.
