Educator and Gospel Artist Kerlyne Liberus on “You’re Good to Me” (Cover)

Hailing from Southern New Jersey, the music of Kerlyne Liberus is a vibrant tapestry woven with her rich Haitian heritage and the deep-rooted Christian values from her upbringing in New York and New Jersey. From an early age, she was inspired by her father, who played the accordion and sang with his group, ‘Les Freres Unis’. This familial influence ignited her passion for singing and performing, leading her to start singing in her church’s children’s group. As her talent blossomed, she began performing solo parts and participating in high school events, setting the stage for a remarkable musical journey. Colorfully dynamic, wonderfully expressive, and with a voice capable of strengthening our ties with the Holy Spirit, Kerlyne Liberus‘s brand of Gospel has lit up the hearts of many. For Kerlyne, music is a divine gift, a way of spreading God’s word and healing through song. Her mission is clear: to inspire positive action and comfort those in need.

You’re Good To Me” is a heartfelt English rendition of “Ou Bon Pou Mwen” by James Smith Alcindor, beautifully interpreted by Liberus. This song deeply resonates, honoring God for his boundless goodness. Kerlyne’s soulful voice and passionate delivery elevate the music, making it a poignant reminder of divine grace and gratitude. Through “You’re Good To Me,” Kerlyne invites listeners to reflect on their blessings and celebrate the unwavering love and generosity of God.

Kerlyne weighed in on her musical roots, her love for Gospel and her hopes for listeners

Can you tell us more about yourself and when you started your musical journey?

I am a teacher at heart that is why I studied Early Childhood Education and I love singing. I started my musical journey when I was about 13 years old but I was too shy to sing alone. I then started singing with the children’s group in my church and when I emigrated to the USA, I joined a choir which allowed me to lead some of the songs from there, I started my solo career in 2012 and released my first and only album Who Am I? in 2016.

What has been the response from your fans and listeners to this song?

So far, this song has been a blessing. Although it is a translation of Ou Bon Pou Mwen of James Smith Alcindor which had been very successful, many people have expressed their love for my version and how they listen to it every day. Some people have even requested the instrumental version so they can sing it at their church.

Can you talk about the message you wanted to convey through this song?

I wanted to remind people of the goodness of the Lord. We really don’t deserve all that he’s done for us on a daily basis but because he’s good, he doesn’t look over our faults but he keeps on blessing us no matter what. When things get hard, he makes a way for us and he’s always with us. So, no matter the circumstances we ought to know that his goodness is what keeps us going.

Were there any artists or musical elements that helped inspire the adaptation of your cover?

Not really. I was sitting down at home one afternoon and I kept on singing the song and suddenly some crazy ideas were coming to me so I took my phone and recorded them and sent them to the composer who helped me put the song together.

Can you share any memorable moments or stories from the filming of the music video?

The video was shot in one day. I was in Miami, Fl for my graduation last December and I thought I’d do the video as a thank you to God for keeping me motivated throughout my educational journey. I graduated high school in 2001 and I didn’t get my bachelor’s degree until 2023 that over 20 years since I have been trying. So, this video is a testament of my joy and certainly it’s my way of thanking God for everything he’s done for me through my ups and downs. He never abandoned me and I am grateful.

What do you hope viewers take away from watching the music video?

The message the song is conveying. That the Lord is and always will be good. His grace is always going to be sufficient, we just need to remember that all things are possible through him who strengthens us.

How do you integrate your faith and spirituality into your creative process?

Faith and spirituality provide me with a deep well of inspiration and guidance. I am very intentional so that helps me to meditate, pray, and reflect on the core values of what I believe and what I believe is that God never fails and he never will. Through faith and spirituality, I find myself, my inspiration, and my mindfulness and they all help me to live what I sing and share my story so that others can be encouraged.

What advice would you give to aspiring gospel artists?

Cultivate their faith. This will help them to stay grounded by spending time in prayer, meditation which will inform and inspire their music. They need to be resilient, continue to build their community, and blend their passion for gospel music with a strong sense of purpose and professional development. This will help them make a meaningful impact and inspire others through their gift.

What are your goals for the future of your music career?

I want to continue working on improving my craft, create music that resonates deeply with listeners and makes a positive impact, Collaborate with other artists, producers, and songwriters. I want to get more involved in my community, do more live performances, and I pray that my singing will be a sustainable career. I am currently working on songs that will soon be released so, connect with me on all social platforms to be the first to know about my new songs and when I will be in your area.
