According to a statement, the singer and rapper, born Lawson Mayo, is pioneering a movement he calls “Sexxnb,” inspired by the colorful sounds of the plugg scene where he cut his teeth and incorporating the sensuous energy of R&B hits made by the likes of Tyrese, Keith Sweat, and Charlie Wilson before he was even born. When asked how he fell in love with this old-school scene, Lawsy’s answer is matter-of-fact. He didn’t have a parent or older sibling to hip him to music from past decades: It was his own voracious appetite for new sounds that, coupled with internet savvy, made it possible.
“It was just me being younger and bored and on YouTube a lot. I was listening to all kinds of music, underground artists I didn’t even know were underground at the time I was so young,” he says. “I was just finding everything.”
