Who Is midwest lyrical magician Interstate Inf?

imageInterstate Inf caught my attention when he captured the stage during the Phenom Hype party presented by the *1000 Network, a Texas-based digital radio network. The network includes broadcasts from Japan, Canada and UK as well as domestically. Interstate Inf stood out on stage as well as in our conversation and I’d say he’s a very interesting one to watch, both literally and figuratively.

The event joined the forces of The Hype Magazine and Phenom Radio, to bring media execs to the artists. Things were noisy and I myself was in mid conversation with the Phenom Radio Execs Slate Stone and Slim Baby when Inf took the stage. Well, the conversation stopped and in the end, here’s our interview with the dynamic Interstate Inf.

From the outside looking in, who is Interstate Inf?

Interstate Inf is a humble artist who came from humble beginnings, but in the same breath, in the music industry, you have to have a certain amount of confidence. When people hear Interstate Inf, I want them to think of my great work ethic.

What brought you to the entertainment industry, music specifically?

As a kid, I remember my Aunt Denise recording Yo MTV Raps and sending me tapes from Germany. I found the love for the music thru watching the videos and listening to the artists at work. I remember watching them performing in their videos and dreaming that it could be me. Specifically, EPMD, NWA, and Snoop Dogg were the artists I looked up to. Later on, Master P, Soulja Slim, Mac, and Three Six Mafia paved the way for me to want to pursue music as a career.

What do you want people get from your music?

I want my fans to “get” the genuine story that stems from my reality. Unlike a lot of modern day rappers, I don’t rap about things I haven’t experienced, or things I don’t have. I also want my fans to feel the struggle, and be able to relate. On the other hand, I want my fans to see that you can literally start from nothing, you can’t let that stop you from pursuing your dreams, whatever they may be.

Tell us about your current project and your latest single.

Currently, I am working on my mixtape “Every Dollar Count.” On EDC, you will hear a variety of sounds, from trap to soul. I have many great artists collaborating with me on this project. Shout out to C Chop, Yung Steez, Darryl J, Creep Da Don, Lil Stoney, J Raw, Lafayette Red, and T Rell (T Rell Music). These are just to name a few. My latest single, “I Prefer” (prod by Fly Guy Slim) has been featured on numerous radio stations around the United States. Be on the lookout for Every Dollar Count this year.

For new listeners, what song of yours would you pick as an introduction to you?

My new song “Hard times” featuring J Raw. You can hear the pain I went thru as an adolescent. While it wasn’t always bad, I definitely felt the struggle for a young Black Man growing up in the hood. “Hard Times” will also be featured on Every Dollar Count.

Tell us about the music scene in your neck of the woods.

While there is a lot of talent in my neck of the woods, most times it is clouded by hate, jealousy, and greed. If more people would come together to reach the top, they would be more successful. I pretty much stay to myself, working with a select few. As we all know, the music industry is a dog eat dog world.

Who are the top DJs in your region?

DJ Swayd, DJ Green, DJ Mellie Mel, DJ Chain, DJ Miz B

Tell us a bit about your work and passions OUTSIDE of music…

I have a passion to learn new things. Lately, I have been interested in learning about script writing. I feel like as an artist, you need to have knowledge in all aspects, not only the audio, but visually.

Last but not least, HYPE wants to know…What’s your CRAZIEST “Where they do that at?!” moment…

The list could go on forever, but who takes a picture of a gun off of the Internet and sends it to your inbox, threatening you, but when you see them in person it’s like a family reunion. WHERE THEY DO THAT AT???

Indeed ~ JD
